Mobile broadband has revolutionized our Internet experience. As more and more people are logging on to the Internet on the go, the need for a faster connection has become imperative, what with all the music downloads, video streaming and other Internet activities that consumes bandwidth. Thanks to mobile broadband, the bandwidth that is being delivered to consumers increased. Broadband actually refers to a term that pertains to a wide array of frequencies in a certain transmission system. If the bandwidth is larger, so does the frequency.

In general, the whole idea of having a broadband connection is to have a "high-speed" connection to the Internet. Being "high-speed" means having a high rate of data transmission. But too often, the mobile broadband speed of a Internet service provider does not measure up to what is advertised, leaving broadband users frustrated. While there are legitimate reasons for slow data transmission, such as traffic management or software on the computer, there are times that a slow mobile broadband speed is unacceptable and is due to poor service.

What to do about this? The first thing you may do is check your mobile broadband speed. It is important to determine the speed of your mobile broadband in order to calculate the necessary steps that you should take. The best way to check your mobile broadband speed is by using a credible speed checker.

Checking your broadband speed is easy, quick and most of all, it's free. You may do so now if like. This website gives you the opportunity to know your mobile broadband speed. Take note that it is to your advantage to test the speed of your mobile broadband. Annoyed that your every download takes so long to be finished? Always having trouble streaming music and videos to your computer or mobile device? Put the speed of your mobile broadband to the test to see if your Internet service provider is true to their promise.

Once you have checked the speed of your mobile broadband and find it unsatisfactory, give your broadband provider a call. Find out if there is anything they can do to improve your broadband speed. You may need to upgrade your modem or have a technician check your line. If there's no improvement you have the right to file a formal complaint to the company. You have the option to take your case to the small claims court in accordance with the Supply of Goods and Services Act if actions were taken but you are still not satisfied or the company failed to act on your official complaint. Or you may just want to switch to another broadband provider if all else failed. Check out the market for Internet service providers that offer faster and reliable speed. Ask around to find out if these providers deliver on their promise before signing up with them. Just always remember that optimum broadband speed is rarely achieved accurately so the thing to consider is which provider gives the most consistent speed.

From Palki to Metro - The Story of Kolkat's Transport System

There was a time when the world seemed a small place. A small area, a village, a town, a city, became one's world, self-sufficing and complete, and within that area everyone moved around on foot. But alternatives became necessary for the old, infirm and those disinclined to walk, or those who needed to move faster. For a long time then, people went on horseback. In Kolkata, the thika, a public palanquin that could be hired, and the horse-drawn carriage were the earliest known means of public transport. In those days of the purdah system, special screened palanquins were made for women, followed by lighter, open ones more like sedan chairs, and were called tonjon. These have all disappeared from the roads, but according to the last count in 1987, 33 of these were found plying at the Maidan, Strand, Rajabazar and Kidderpore, for joyrides.

Around 1900 A.D., the rickshaw, was introduced, initially to negotiate the flooded, waterlogged streets, but became a permanent feature on the city's roads. By 1913, they came to be used commercially with Chinese pullers. During the 1920s, they became completely indianised.

The only form of mass public transport was by water. When the Hoara Station opened in 1854, to make it easier for people to move from one city to another by train, these passengers had to be ferried across the river on launches and country boats. It was around this time that a three-horse-pulled omnibus plied briefly between Dharamtala and Barrackpore. In 1864, horse-drawn buses were also introduced on a commercial basis, but this venture was not successful.

The transport system was transformed with the arrival of tramcars on the scene, and these were doubtlessly the most successful form of public transport. It was started on an experimental basis by the Justices of the Peace in 1873 between Sealdah Station and Armenian Ghat. However, it was soon privatized, as it was not profitable. In 1878, a British tramway engineering company constructed an eight-route system, and sold it to the Calcutta Tramways Company. Soon, horse-driven tramcars could be seen in Sealdah, Dalhousie, Chitpur, Chourangi, Dharamtala, Strand Road, Shyam Bazaar, Khidirpur and Wellesley.

The next entrant on the transport scene was the steam-powered car followed by the use of the electric traction system for running trams. For a long time, tramcars remained the only form of public transport in Kolkata. The first motorcar was seen on the city's roads in 1896. Commercial use of cars as taxis started in 1906, and became a popular form of transportation especially for the elite. A bus service came into operation in 1920, and it took a tram strike to give the bus service its much-needed push. Double-decker buses arrived on the scene in 1926 and by 1935 bus service operations were privatized.

As populations continued to grow the city of Kolkata was ready to burst at the seams with people. Only 6.5% of the city's area was used for roads in contrast to 23% in Delhi. The inevitable consequence was chaotic traffic, and this kept getting worse. Kolkata became famous for its traffic jams, bottle-necked streets and reaching anywhere on time, a far-fetched dream. The masses, up in arms about trivial issues, were surprisingly complacent about the problem of traffic and mayhem on the roads. Problems kept multiplying and soon a need was felt for a new mass transport system that could spread across the city. Thus India got its mass rapid transport system in the form of the Metro in Kolkata. This underground network is even today, the pride of Kolkata, as it is one service that has remained as clean and efficient as it was when it was started. Used by thousands of people each day, it has somewhat resolved the traffic crisis that could have crippled Kolkata decades ago. It is the best thing to have happened to Kolkata, saving on pollution, noise, congestion and heat. Today, it is stretching across the city's suburbs and the process of expanding its network continues.

Gossip Girl Spoilers: More on Tyra Banks and Hilary Duff

As we all know, Tyra Banks and Hilary Duff are coming to Gossip Girl next week. Today's TV Guide spoiler column has the latest on what we can expect then ...

Q: I can't wait to see Hilary Duff on Gossip Girl. Who will she have scenes with?

A: Who won't she have scenes with? I had heard that movie star Olivia Burke (Duff) would be rooming with Vanessa, but I had no idea she'd be romancing Dan and working with Serena. (Yes, you heard that right: working.)

But forget all that, if you're looking for an excuse to laugh louder than you ever have in your life, honest human emotion, wait until you see Duff and her fellow guest star Tyra Banks' virtuoso performances in Fleur.

That would be the film-within-the-show about, of course, the French resistance during World War II. Talk about Les Miserables!

Quite a lot of hype. Are you excited for Hilary and Tyra or no?

Email and the Iphone

Email is not just for computers any longer. You Dsl Report Test check your email from just about any cellular phone today that has Internet access. However, those that use the iPhone may use it for email more so than anyone else with any other type of phone. This tool brings email into your hands when you are nowhere near your laptop or your desktop PC. As easy and accessible as this is, you can still run into some of the same problems you would on your home or work computer.

You may not be sure about all of the email addresses that pop up in your account, and it can be harder to tell when you have to deal with the email from your iPhone. When it doubt, you do not have to open any email until you have had time to figure out if you are sure that is what you want to do. If someone is in your address book, you already have all that you need. However, that does not always happen and you have to know your options for finding a name to go with that address.

One of the first things you can do with an unknown email address is to do a random Web Plan through your favorite search engine. All you have to do is to enter the address and then see if you can find it in the results that come up. Put quotes around the entire address if you find that your results are only giving you bits and pieces rather than the entire and full address.

If you do not find much that way, you have more places through which you can look. See what you find through places like MySpace or FaceBook. You can search the email address through them, and sometimes with great luck. Most sign up with their primary email address, and that means they are searchable through social and professional networks. You can sometimes view a profile to learn about someone unknown to you.

There are other options out there as well. You can find what are called reverse email searches. Some are free and some require a small fee. What is great about these is that you can usually find something there when it seems nothing is going to come up through the other above search choices.

Works anywhere - input location - gives antenna dish pointing angles with elevation and magnetic compass azimuth bearing. Good for polar mount set up.

Have you signed up for an unlimited?package only to read the small print and find out that your broadband can be capped? Most companies who sell an unlimited?service also have what is called a fair usage policy? which can end up imposing limits on your downloading.

If you are one of the millions of people who download music, movies and high resolution photos, then this could affect to you. While you might not be downloading anything like 20GB a month now, the imminent rise in legal film downloads, is Mbps Speed one way in which this is set to change.

What to look out for

Put simply, fair usage is the broadband streamyx help line attempt at keeping cyber traffic down. The policy was designed to protect the people who might be affected by your downloading.

If you have an ADSL line, then you share probably your connection with the rest of your street. Because ADSL uses the old BT copper wires network, there is a limit to the capacity that they can carry.

The problem is that if youre a big downloader, you could be slowing down the broadband connection of up to 50 other people. And if you are regularly affecting other peoples internet, your ISP might decide that something needs to be done.

On the other hand, contention ratios for the 2.2 million cable customers (Ofcom, 2006) will be much lower, so they will be sharing with fewer people.

Its when you use it, not how

Your ISP is only trying to ensure that everyone has a good user experience. Those most likely to be affected by the fair usage policy are:

  • Users of peer to peer networks uploading and downloading lots of films and music.
  • Online gamers.
  • People working from home and remotely connecting to the office.

If any of these apply to you, try cutting down your internet usage, or try downloading in the small hours when less people will be online in your street. That way you can still download as much as you want, without causing problems for anyone else.

Typical penalties

Most ISPs will ignore over-sized downloading for a month or two, and will then get in touch asking that you curb your usage. If, however, you continue to exceed the limits they are likely to take action.

This could take the form of reducing the speed of your connection, therefore limiting the amount that can be downloaded, restricting your usage at peak times, charging you for your excess usage, or restricting your use of peer to peer sites.

In extreme cases, they might terminate your contract, cutting off your internet until you can get a new connection.

If, having signed up for an unlimited?package, and anything like this does happen you dont have to just accept their decision. There is something you can do.

Dispute and resolution

Get in touch with Otelo, the telecommunication industrys watchdog, whose job it is to investigate complaints by customers. 33 per cent of ISPs are members of the body, so it is always advisable to use a company that is signed up, in case you do run into any problems. Click here to check if your provider is a member.

Otelo also charges members for being investigated so it will help your case to get them involved.
If your ISP isnt a member of Otelo, try Ofcom, the independent regulator for the UK, who will still be able to help.

I have to face facts; Im a download-a-holic?/b>

If you know that you make big downloads, then it might simply be time to admit that you need to cut down.

But what counts as a big download? The average 12 track album is about 0.48GB, while a downloaded movie can be anything up to 1GB. Apples new movie downloads service, although only currently available in a US format, are 2.5GB in size.

You need to be realistic ?if you are doing a lot of downloading, you need a beefy package. It saves on the aggravation and cost of calls to your ISPs customer service centre.

So what is the right package?

Why go through the hassle of a fair usage deal and risk incurring the wrath of your ISP when you exceed your limit? Try a high end package where unlimited really means unlimited.

Some of the best providers for heavy downloaders at the moment are Telewest and ntl. Since they are not reliant on the old copper network and have fewer people sharing lines, you are less likely to run into fair usage problems. You could also try Be There Broadband ?a high-end download network for broadband users.

Fair usage deals

Theres nothing wrong with these deals, but you need to be careful and keep an eye on your downloading.

Use a download compressor

If you cant bear to cut down on your downloading, but dont want to spend more on upgrading your package, you could try using a download compressor like OnSpeed, which increases connection speed by compressing files. The software costs 24.99 for a 12 month subscription (though you still need to pay your ISP for your connection).

However, it cannot compress file downloads or uploads such as QuickTime files, MP3, AVI, MPEG, exes or streaming media content, so it is most useful for people who have already had restrictions put on their connection as it can increase broadband speeds by up to five times.

Read our guide to choosing a cheap broadband package in the UK. Compare packages and sort by price / check notes on any restrictions are also listed.

The Playstation 3 is a costly game console which raises your expectations regarding broadband service provider reliability. Well, it is generally reliable as far as its hardware goes, the exception being a few minor glitches shared by the majority Mbps Speed such systems. However, it has given users some problems in the area of its software updates.

For a lot of reasons, many people have had to get the ps3 repaired because of botched software updates, especially 2.40. This problem has been fixed now, but if you should encounter it, there are some options. This is certainly one of the most irritating PlayStation 3 problems.

You could send it in and get it serviced but this will take a while and may cost a lot which is more than you want to spend fixing your ps3 problems. You can simply reformat the Hard Drive of your PS3 and the system will repair itself. Be careful because you will lose all your data.

The focus on memory may seem odd if you're used to desktop systems that have never mounted a swap drive in anger, but, in fact, the PS3 doesn't have enough memory for a modern desktop ps3 linux to feel comfortable on it out of the box. With a default PlayStation 3 problems Fedora 7 install, the system spends a lot of its time (and yours) swapping. Swapping imposes a large penalty on any system; on a system built around a 2.5-inch disk drive accessed through a hypervisor, with main memory that's substantially faster than what you find in most desktops.

On top of your basic troubleshooting check list, you should double check your cable connections and make sure the power is properly connected. It is a good idea to safeguard any expensive electronics, such as your PS3, by having them connected to a surge protector.

Power, video, and audio cables have problems now and then so try to get new ones if you don't see anything else that can be fixed on your ps3. For a situation with a HD TV the ps3 doesn't upgrade to 1080i so it doesn't matter if the TV and cables can it still won't have a better appearance.

If you have a disc that works perfectly well in alternate DVD or Blu-Ray devices, try cleaning the lens. This requires a steady hand, a cotton swab and a some rubbing alcohol. Try swabbing the glass in each direction. Be very careful though, as too much might cause additional PlayStation 3 problems.
